A schoolteacher reads aloud excerpts from the most poignant scenes of violence against women in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. As the ancient verses echo through the classroom, her students begin to recognize the cruelty beneath the poetry — the myths reveal themselves to be an unsettling mirror of contemporary reality.

Maria Giménez Cavallo (1992) was born in New York to an Italian-American mother and a Spanish father. After graduating from Columbia University, she collaborated with Abdellatif Kechiche as Assistant Director and Editor on the Mektoub, My Love trilogy. She then worked alongside Pietro Marcello as Assistant Director for Futura and as Art Director for Scarlet Sails. Her works explore our relationship with nature, as evidenced in Jeanne, petite bergère (Shortlist Quinzaine 2020), La grande quercia (2022 Bellaria Film Festival), La visita (2022 Locarno Film Festival), and Anime galleggianti (Alice nella Città 2024).
